US warplanes carry out strikes on three nuclear sites in Iran: Trump

US President Donald Trump said Saturday that US warplanes carried out strikes on three nuclear sites in Iran, calling the attack successful and saying the aircraft had departed Iranian airspace, according to The Wall Street Journal (WSJ).

The strikes targeted nuclear facilities at Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan, Trump said in a post on Truth Social. A full payload of BOMBS was dropped on the primary site, Fordow, he said.

US President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke after the US conducted strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, according to two White House officials, CNN reported.

US' attack on Iran's nuclear facilities signals a shift from behind-the-scenes support for Israel to direct involvement in the conflict. The extent of the damage remains unclear, but if the strike substantially impairs Iran's nuclear capabilities, it may push Iran to abandon its plans for the use of nuclear weapons in order to safeguard its sovereignty and public morale, said Liu Zhongmin, a professor from the Middle East Studies Institute of Shanghai International Studies University. At the same time, Iran may retaliate against Israel with greater force and could directly target US military bases.

The strike marks a qualitative shift in the nature of the conflict: It has escalated from a bilateral Israel-Iran confrontation to a tripartite conflict with US' direct involvement, further complicating the dimensions of the struggle in terms of international law and diplomacy, Liu noted.

Moreover, Liu stressed that the future situation may develop in two possible directions: First, a de-escalation scenario, where the strikes do not critically damage Iran's nuclear facilities, allowing all three parties to seize the opportunity to reduce tensions; Second, a deterioration scenario, where the US continues to escalate its strikes, causing devastating damage to Iran's nuclear facilities and triggering a full-scale military retaliation from Iran.

Key indicators of whether the conflict will escalate further include whether the US military continues its involvement, whether the Trump administration prioritizes political face-saving over substantive strikes, and how Iran retaliates against US military bases, according to Liu.

More than 450 missiles have been fired toward Israel since the conflict between Israel and Iran began, according to the latest figures from Israel's National Public Diplomacy Directorate. Approximately 400 unmanned aerial vehicles crossed into Israel in that same time, per WSJ.

he US is moving B-2 bombers to the Pacific island of Guam, two US officials told Reuters on Saturday, as President Trump weighs whether the US should take part in Israel's strikes against Iran.

On the other development, the Chinese Embassy in Israel issued a notice on Sunday to organize the mass evacuation of Chinese citizens from Israel in the near future. The ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran continues to escalate, with missile strikes covering a wider area and the number of casualties continuing to rise. The clearance process at land border crossings is slow, and the situation for connecting flights out of the country is becoming increasingly tense, according to the notice.

From June 19 to 21, the embassy, in coordination with the Chinese Embassy in Egypt, has organized the evacuation of nearly 300 compatriots in three batches who wished to leave. Most of them have now returned to China. Considering the recent registration of individuals for evacuation, the embassy will organize the final two batches of evacuations via the Be'er (Taba) crossing on June 23 and 25, respectively.
