US admin's proposed postwar Gaza plan envisions a ‘gleaming tourist resort, high-tech hub’; local opposition expected: media

A postwar plan for Gaza circulating within the current US administration, modeled on US President Trump's vow to take over the enclave, would turn it into a trusteeship administered by the US for at least 10 years while it is transformed into a gleaming tourism resort and high-tech manufacturing and technology hub, the Washington Post reported.

This plan is 38 pages long and envisions at least a temporary relocation of all of Gaza's more than two million population, either through what it calls voluntary departures to another country or into restricted, secured zones inside the enclave during reconstruction, the report said.

Those who own land would be offered a digital token by the trust in exchange for rights, each Palestinian who chooses to leave would be given a $5,000 cash payment and subsidies to cover four years of rent elsewhere, as well as a year of food, the Washington Post reported.

Called the Gaza Reconstitution, Economic Acceleration and Transformation Trust, or GREAT Trust, the proposal was developed by some of the same Israelis who created and set in motion the US-and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), according to the report.

As of press time, the White House and US State Department did not respond to a request for comment.

It may seem that the current US administration is creating the illusion of the US taking the lead in resolving the Palestinian issue, in reality it reflects a unilateral, high-handed move, Liu Zhongmin, a professor at the Middle East Studies Institute of Shanghai International Studies University, told the Global Times on Monday.

Trump suggested on February 4 the permanent relocation of Palestinians from Gaza, stating that the US will take over the Gaza Strip. Such remarks were described as shock by several Western media outlets, including The Guardian and Reuters. The US will take over the Gaza Strip and we will do a job with it too, Trump said during a joint press conference alongside his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu, according to a CNN report then.

This postwar plan for Gaza, Liu noted, aims to offer Palestinians economic benefits in exchange for territorial concessions, forge a relatively stable Middle East landscape favorable to Israel, and thereby serve the Washington's global strategy.

Abu Mohamed, a 55-year-old father speaking over WhatsApp from Gaza on Saturday, said that despite the catastrophic situation, he would never leave. I'm staying in a partially destroyed house in Khan Younis now, he said. But we could renovate. I refuse to be made to go to another country, Muslim or not. This is my homeland, according to the Washington Post.

China firmly supports the legitimate national rights of the Palestinian people, believes that 'the Palestinians governing Palestine' is an important principle that must be upheld in the post-conflict governance of Gaza, and opposes the forced displacement of the people of Gaza, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said on February 6, in response to an inquiry about the extensive opposition from the international community to Trump's proposal to clear out and take over Gaza.
