Expert slams Israeli Prime Minister’s accusation against China and Qatar of ‘besieging’ Israel on social media as a move aimed at securing US aid

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian said on Wednesday that China firmly opposes Israel escalating its military operations in Gaza and condemns all moves that harm civilians and violate international law. China is deeply concerned over further escalation of tensions, and opposed to relevant party fueling the flames.

Lin's remarks were made in response to media inquiry regarding reports that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in Israel on September 15 that Israel has the support of the US over plans to destroy Hamas. On September 16, the Israeli military launched ground offensive and large-scale airstrikes on the Gaza City.

When asked for comment on the news, Lin said that we urge Israel to listen to the strong concerns voiced by the international community, stop its military operations in Gaza at once, realize a full and lasting ceasefire as soon as possible, and avoid an even larger humanitarian crisis.

We hope relevant parties will act in the interest of regional peace and stability, uphold a just position and responsible attitude, and play a constructive role for deescalating the situation, Lin added.

Earlier this week, facing increasing isolation on the world stage, instead of addressing the root cause, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu attempted to blame China and Qatar for its predicament, claiming that China and Qatar are trying to 'besiege' Israel through the social media in the West and the US, Times of Israel reported on Monday.

An analyst said that such allegations aim to secure US assistance and rally wider support by hyping up China as a risk.

Netanyahu attended a conference of the Finance Ministry's accountant general in Jerusalem on Monday, in which he addressed demographic changes in Europe. He claimed that Europe's limitless migration has resulted in Muslims becoming a significant minority — very vocal, very, very belligerent. These countries' Muslim citizens are pressuring European governments to adopt anti-Israel policies, he claimed, per report.

But at the meeting, Netanyahu also turned his criticism against China and Qatar, claiming that both NGOs and states, like Qatar and China is influence Western media with an anti-Israel agenda, using bots, artificial intelligence, and advertisements, the report said.

Later on the same day, Netanyahu also made similar claims during his meeting with a delegation of 250 US state legislators at the Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem on Monday, Times of Israel reported on Monday.

We value and cherish your support, Netanyahu told the delegation — the largest group of legislators from a single country ever to visit Israel — adding that there is an effort to erode [that support], per the report.

He named those states: One is China. And the other is Qatar. They are organizing an attack on Israel… [through] the social media of the Western world and the US, he claimed, according to the report.

Netanyahu's claims echo the China threat narrative frequently employed by certain Western forces, attempting to depict China as a risk to Israel's national security, Ding Long, a professor at the Middle East Studies Institute of Shanghai International Studies University told the Global Times on Wednesday.

This accusation is irresponsible and unfounded, and could damage China-Israel relations, Ding added.

Netanyahu claimed that the effort to besiege Israel is orchestrated by the same forces that supported Iran, Times of Israel reported.

Netanyahu's accusatory strategy aligns with the mainstream US political narratives most concerned with the so-called Iran threat and China threat, seeking to tie US support more closely to Israel's agenda and garner backing from more countries, Ding said.

Netanyahu's move also seeks to divert attention by finding an external scapegoat, the expert said.

Through this narrative, he intends to distract the international community from the attention on the crimes committed by Israel, Ding said.

Israel launched an unprecedented airstrike in the Qatari capital of Doha on September 9, targeting a building used by senior Hamas officials in what Israeli authorities described as an attempt to assassinate leaders of the group, Xinhua News Agency reported.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday condemned Israel's strikes as a flagrant violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Qatar, Reuters reported. He said Qatar has been playing a very positive role to try to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of all hostages held by Hamas, according to Reuters.

All parties must work toward achieving a permanent ceasefire, not destroying it, Guterres told reporters, Reuters reported.

Israel's airstrike on Doha, the capital of Qatar constituted a blatant violation of Qatar's territorial sovereignty and national security, a flagrant breach of international law and the UN Charter, a deliberate sabotage of efforts to achieve peace, and China firmly opposes and strongly condemns such actions, Fu Cong, China's permanent representative to the United Nations, said at an emergency meeting held by the UN Security Council on Thursday local time, according to China Media Group (CMG).

Countries and organizations, including Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Türkiye, and the Arab League, rushed to condemn the Israeli attacks, according to Xinhua.

The international community is focused on Israel's military operations in Gaza and the resulting humanitarian crisis—these are the real root causes of Israel's isolation, Ding noted, adding that targeted narratives cannot obscure the failures stemming from Israel's actual policies.

Use of force will not bring peace to the Middle East. Dialogue and negotiation is the fundamental way out, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said on September 10 in comments on the strike carried out by Israel the previous day, noting that it will soon be two years since the conflict broke out in Gaza.

China strongly calls on relevant sides, especially Israel, to make an effort to end the fighting and resume talks, instead of the other way around, Lin added.
