US imposes Iran-related sanctions on Chinese, UAE-based entities; move will 'only further worsen' nuclear issue

The US on Tuesday local time imposed sanctions on six entities and two individuals in Iran, the United Arab Emirates and China whom it accused of being part of an Iranian weapons procurement network, as the US government seeks to ramp up pressure on Iran, Reuters reported.

A Chinese expert warned that sanctions are not a solution to the Iran nuclear issue; on the contrary, they will further deteriorate the situation and fuel anti-American sentiment in the region, stressing that China has been consistently voicing opposition toward the US unilateral sanctions on Iran and dialogue remains the only viable solution.

US Treasury Secretary imposed the sanctions on those entities and individuals, accusing them of responsibility for procurement of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) components on behalf of a leading manufacturer for Iran's drone program, according to a statement published on its website on Tuesday.

China-based motor manufacturer Zibo Shenbo Machinelectronics Co Ltd was listed among the sanctioned entities.

If sanctions are used as a means to resolve the Iran nuclear issue, it will only lead to an escalation of tensions, Sun Degang, director of the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at Fudan University, told the Global Times on Wednesday.

The US has imposed sanctions, including secondary sanctions and long-arm jurisdiction, on Iran for many years. However, the results have been far from effective - in fact, the Iran nuclear issue has only intensified, Sun said, noting that dialogue remains the only viable solution.

The latest sanctions were imposed amid escalating tensions between Washington and Teheran, as the US President Donald Trump threatened Iran on Sunday with bombing and secondary tariffs if Tehran did not come to an agreement with Washington over its nuclear program.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei warned on Monday that any wicked action by the US or Israel against Tehran would be met with a forceful retaliation, according to the Xinhua News Agency report.

On March 14, China, Russia and Iran issued a joint statement, reaffirming that political and diplomatic engagement and dialogue remains the only viable and practical option for the Iranian nuclear issue after deputy foreign ministers of the three nations held a meeting in Beijing.

In commenting the meeting between China, Russia and Iran, Mao Ning, spokesperson of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, said in a routine press briefing on March 14 that the three parties reiterated that political and diplomatic engagement and dialogue remains the only viable and practical option and called on relevant parties to abandon sanction, pressure and threat of force and refrain from any action that may escalate the situation.

Sanction, pressuring and threat of force lead nowhere, whereas dialogue and consultation provides the right way forward, Mao noted.

We call on parties to step up communication and dialogue and accumulate enabling conditions for talks and negotiations to resume at an early date, Mao said.

When asked about the US' announcement in March of sanctions against an oil refinery in East China's Shandong and an oil terminal in South China's Guangdong for importing Iranian oil, Mao said on March 21 that China has always opposed the abuse of illegal unilateral sanctions and long-arm jurisdiction and urged the US to stop interfering with and undermining the normal trade and economic cooperation between China and Iran.

Both the US and Iran have a need to reach an agreement, but they remain deeply divided on core demands. The latest sanctions will undoubtedly further deepen strategic mistrust between the two countries regarding the Iran nuclear issue, Liu Zhongmin, a professor from the Middle East Studies Institute of Shanghai International Studies University, told the Global Times on Wednesday.

Recently, the US has repeatedly issued threats of military action against Iran, escalating regional tensions. Although Iran has maintained a relatively low profile in the Israel-Palestine conflict, it has shown no signs of backing down when it comes to major national security interests, Liu said.

Regarding the latest sanctions, Liu emphasized that the US' continued pressure not only undermines the effectiveness of existing international coordination mechanisms but also makes it even more difficult to resolve the Iran nuclear issue through multilateral frameworks.
