Chinese vice premier meets Iranian FM
Chinese Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang met with Iran's Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi in Beijing on Wednesday.
Ding, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, said China is willing to work with Iran to deliver on the common understandings between the two heads of state, deepen high-level exchanges and consolidate political mutual trust, according to the Xinhua News Agency.
The two countries should also expand pragmatic cooperation, strengthen coordination in international and regional affairs, and promote the steady and long-term progress of the China-Iran comprehensive strategic partnership that benefits the two countries and their peoples, Ding said.
Araghchi said that Iran attaches great importance to the comprehensive strategic partnership, and is willing to deepen mutually beneficial cooperation, enhance multilateral coordination and safeguard their common interests, said the report.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, also a Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, held talks with Araghchi on Wednesday, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said.
Wang stated that in recent years, China and Iran have worked together, supported each other and deepened political mutual trust through mutual support. They have strengthened their ties through pragmatic cooperation and united in the fight against unilateral bullying. The strategic significance of China-Iran relations has become even more prominent.
Araghchi emphasized that Iran attaches great importance to developing its relationship with China, adheres to the One China principle, and supports China in safeguarding its core interests. He stated that the China-Iran comprehensive strategic partnership, based on mutual trust, is at its best point in history.
The foundation of the two countries' friendship is solid and will not be influenced by other factors. In the face of the US misusing tariffs and engaging in bullying, Iran will continue to firmly support China, jointly oppose unilateralism and hegemony, and defend multilateralism.
Iran supports China's role as the rotating chair of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and is willing to maintain close high-level exchanges, expand mutually beneficial cooperation and strengthen communication and coordination in multilateral mechanisms such as the United Nations and BRICS to advance the development of China-Iran relations, Araghchi said.
Wang and Aragchi held an in-depth exchange of views on the latest developments regarding the Iran nuclear issue. Wang emphasized that China is always committed to a political and diplomatic solution to the Iran nuclear issue and opposes resorting to force or illegal unilateral sanctions.
China appreciates Iran's commitment of not developing nuclear weapons, respects Iran's right to peacefully use nuclear energy, and supports Iran in engaging in dialogue with all parties, including the US, to protect its legitimate rights through negotiation. This approach helps maintain the international non-proliferation regime and contributes to regional peace and stability, Wang said.
Araghchi praised China's important and positive role in promoting a political and diplomatic resolution of the Iran nuclear issue and expressed Iran's willingness to maintain close communication and coordination with China on this matter.
The visit highlights China's pivotal role in the Iran nuclear issue, with China and Iran reaffirming their comprehensive strategic partnership, Chinese observers said, emphasizing that the ongoing US-Iran negotiations will not come at the expense of China-Iran relations.
It is necessary that we keep our friends in China fully informed about ongoing matters and consult with them, Araghchi told Iran's state media Press TV on Wednesday.
As the Iranian Foreign Minister stated, the main purpose of the visit is to brief China on the status of US-Iran talks, given China's role as a permanent member of the UN Security Council and a signatory and promoter of the Iran nuclear deal. China, Russia and Iran also have a consultation mechanism for the Iran nuclear deal, Ding Long, a professor at the Middle East Studies Institute of Shanghai International Studies University told the Global Times.
It demonstrates the high-intensity and high-trust coordination between the two countries on major matters related to global and regional security, Zhu Yongbiao, Executive Director of the Belt and Road Research Center at Lanzhou University, told the Global Times on Wednesday.
In response to media inquiries asking for comment on the visit of the Iranian Foreign Minister to China and the recent round of strategic consultations between China and Oman, during which the two sides exchanged views on regional hotspot issues of mutual concern, in which Oman has played a mediating role in the negotiations between Iran and the US, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated that Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs Liu Bin and Oman's Foreign Ministry Undersecretary for Political Affairs Sheikh Khalifa Alharthy co-chaired the strategic consultation between the foreign ministries of China and Oman on April 21 in Beijing.
Guo noted that the two sides had an in-depth exchange of views on hotspot issues in the Middle East. China commends Oman for its active role in helping to address regional hotspot issues and deescalating regional tensions. China stands ready to work with Oman to strengthen communication and coordination on international and regional affairs and make joint efforts for regional peace and stability.
Reuters reported that top US and Iranian negotiators will meet again in Oman on Saturday to review the experts' work and assess how closely it aligns with the principles of a potential agreement, Aragchi said.
From a bilateral perspective, China is an important strategic partner for Iran, making it necessary for Iran to update China and Russia on the US-Iran negotiations, Zhu said. He further noted that it sends a signal to the outside world that any thaw in US-Iran relations will not affect China-Iran ties.
Ding concurred with Zhu's view, pointing out that from another perspective, the likelihood of a US-Iran agreement is increasing. He highlighted that US sanctions on Iran have significantly hindered China-Iran cooperation, and their removal would greatly benefit the bilateral partnership.
Over the past years, China has played an instrumental role in advocating for the resolution of global and regional challenges through dialogue, Iran local media the Tehran Times reported.
For now, Aragchi's trip to China highlights Beijing's prominent role in global diplomacy more than ever, per the report.
